Invasive Phragmites Management in Brown County, Wisconsin

The Bay-Lake RPC is managing invasive Phragmites through chemical and mechanical treatments, partner collaborations, and landowner and municipal education and outreach. Invasive Phragmites is currently being targeted in the shoreland areas of Green Bay (from Duck Creek to Point Au Sable), the Fox River (from the De Pere dam to Green Bay), the East River (from STH 172 to the Fox River), Duck Creek (from Pamperin Park to Green Bay), and the Baird Creek Parkway; within the cities of Green Bay, and De Pere, the villages of Allouez, Bellevue, Ashwaubenon, and Howard, and the towns of Ledgeview and Scott in Wisconsin.

Phragmites covers large swaths of the coastline and upstream tributaries to the Fox River. Phragmites not only impacts the coastal wetlands, but also has significantly impacted public access, recreation and property values in the area, and presents a fire risk.

The goal of the project is to work with public and private landowners to remove invasive Phragmites within the Green Bay and Fox River Area of Wisconsin guided by the expertise of an advisory council of local land management professionals. The project will seek long-term maintenance of Phragmites through education/outreach efforts.

We have treated 970 acres of Phragmites in 2016, and mowed 550 acres. We have recently concluded follow up chemical treatments of approximately 600 acres.
